Basel: Riverside impressions

Above all in the past few hot summer weeks, the new stretch of quayside along the Rhine was a feast for the eyes and all the other senses!
Fontana Landschaftsarchitektur designed the temporary paths and spaces for Basel town life.

It’s almost like the atmosphere on the Baltic coast, in between the asphalt, dockside cranes, old rail tracks, new buildings and the canalized Rhine.
The water entices bathers, the bank attracts sun-worshippers, improvised open-air restaurants and other temporary services promise unconventional pleasure and relaxation.

In the background, the Rhine with the buildings on the far bank to see which can glitter the brightest. The promenade itself is alive with the bees buzzing around the opportunistic vegetation growing in the former tracks.

Recycled containers are reincarnated as plant-pots in which fountain grass waves in the wind, while the little poplars and birches rustle. The vegetation creates appealing spaces which are only too ready to be conquered by urban life and the spontaneous Basel culture with its temporary attractions. Long live Basel’s late summer!
