The area taken up by the barracks \u2013 a prime piece of land for town planning purposes \u2013 is situated between the station, the old town and the central district of Igelweid, right in the middle of Aarau, the capital of canton Aargau. Around 2.5 hectares of this land is used for military purposes, making it off-limits for municipal use.<\/p>\n
As part of the densification specifications of the new land-use law, the area has been earmarked as a development hotspot in the canton\u2019s structure plan. It is to be developed from 2030 onwards, when the military leaves the complex.<\/p>\n
One of the canton\u2019s concepts forms the foundation of the goal to transform and densify the plot in the medium term to create a vibrant area for the town. The test plans, which are to get under way in July 2017, are intended to put forward different options and development opportunities.
