An industrial size roof garden
The historic Schoren industrial site in Arlesheim is being transformed into “Uptown”, a competence center for the digital industry. It is to become an open working and living environment that also takes aspects such as climate and ecology into account. This is being made possible thanks to a new approach to free spaces: historic and new buildings are moving closer together, creating space for green areas – for an expanded riverside park on the Birs, but also for new green spaces within the site.
Where buildings occupy the ground level, the plants migrate from the ground level to roof gardens – and thus not only contribute to a good climate in the buildings below, but also provide attractive open space for human users and habitat for the flora and fauna. The first of these roof gardens was completed in December 2021 on the first new building on the site. Growth can begin!
