Flying Bridges on Schüss Island
The new city park in the east of Biel/Bienne is an island between the Schüss and the Strebler Canal. As part of shaping the park, the island, currently unreachable, is being enlarged and made accessible. The bank will also be revitalized, and flood protection adapted to current needs. At the same time the bridges from the park to the town will bridge the divide between the town’s neighbourhoods and provide access to the transformed Schüss Island. Three elegant steel bridges will be assembled alongside the concrete bridges. Since the steel bridges are prefabricated and will be heaved by crane on to the abutments that are already in place, the process will be both an important and a spectacular step that will require great precision. The town, as the client, has invited the press to be there when the final steel bridge is put in place on 19 May 2016. At the same time the hydraulic engineering works and the shaping of the island continue. The Schüss Island is to open to the public in summer 2017.
