Final Work on the Sempach Ornithological Station
At the moment the final touches are being put to the grounds. The last few months have seen, right on the shore of Lake Sempach, the appearance of a landscape which, on a comparatively small area, concentrates a wide variety of habitats and guides the human visitor through the world of birds as an observer at a respectful distance.
152 treetrunks will in future allow vistors to the Sempach Ornithological Centre insights into the world of waterfowl without disturbing the sensitive birds: the walkway has just been completed.
The further away from the new visitor centre one gets, the more subtly the paths and observation platforms are integrated into a landscape that integrates a variety of wild-bird habitats in the smallest of areas. Stumps await their future inhabitants, and the paths around the building are almost complete. The areas to be planted have also been prepared. In the coming weeks, the seedlings will be planted.
As the classic initial planting, they represent the start of a growth process that will be gently guided via the soil properties and the choice of species. Thus the ecologies of the various habitat types can find their natural balance. The inauguration of the new visitor centre is planned for 2 May. Many of the winged inhabitants have long since moved in, because construction work was carefully geared to the birds’ life-cycles.
