Narratives the Landscape

Merian Gardens, Vorder Brüglingen, Basel
The Merian Gardens, formerly a country estate, are now gardens surrounded by the city and an important green space in Basel, an urban area experiencing densification. Vorder Brüglingen is part of these gardens. The park and the one-time location of the legendary Grün 80 exhibition with its striking topography, its acclaimed botanical collections and a historic ensemble of buildings is searching for its identity, position and significance in the city: for a forward-looking form and function between event venue, scientific plant collection and public park.

The development concept weaves the history of the place into a design narrative that will showcase the gardens’ visual feast and the richness of its contents both to those with a botanical bent and visitors seeking rest and relaxation. Vorder Brüglingen is being transformed from a scientific garden with aesthetic value into an inviting park with a strong scientific foundation. This co-existence works – thanks to reduction, the optimization of the organization, and the increased design precision of the different park areas.

The fact that the park is open to the public is communicated through inviting entrances. The gardens’ narrative becomes clear as one strolls through them. The simplified network of paths – a complete circular walk as the main path and side loops providing rich experiences – becomes the thread running through this park experience. Throughout all of this, the park remains a temporal document with elements from all its periods. The design interventions simplify and clarify, without adding many new features. The centre of the park is freed from the Grün 80 installations. All around this open centre, the various parts of the park – waterside landscape, park, grassy slope, forested edges and the hill landscape of the Grün 80 exhibition – will be strengthened in their character. The plant collections are situated around the main path in line with their use and their proper place in the landscape. For example, the fuchsia collection is situated around the central buildings, the snowdrop collection in the dappled shade of the park trees. All around the central utility building, a paved area connects the ensemble of agricultural buildings with the new meeting place / event venue.
