600 Trees for the Schüssinsel

Among the tree species that are currently being planted on the Schüssinsel in Biel are specialities such as black poplars and European white elms, which have become rare in Switzerland. However, native water-loving species such as willows and other ecologically valuable tree species such as aspens, wild cherries and, in the drier parts, Austrian pines, are also being planted. Towards the centre of the island, where the naturalistic design is gradually transformed into a park, a few expressive feature trees such as the striking bald cypress and pecan tree mingle among the native species. The tree planting works are to be completed by January. The festive opening of the new island park with its seven bridges is scheduled for the summer of 2017.
