Guided Tour on Schüssinsel with Massimo Fontana

More than 50,000 square metres of public green space have been newly created in Biel in an area of very intensive densification: Schüssinsel, an island 700 metres long, was created by extending the Stebler Canal. The new park was planned and implemented under the auspices of Fontana Landschaftsarchitektur. Using innovative solutions, it solves ecological requirements, hydro-engineering aspects and recreational purposes all in one.

It was not just the construction element but also the planning process that was remarkable. The town of Biel paved the way with its far-sighted land policy and then handed the remit over to the landscape architects. Fontana Landschaftsarchitektur was responsible for the entire process of implementing the space and utilization programme. This meant the course ahead could be set without delay, engaging the necessary experts so as to produce a complex outside space with qualities on a number of different levels

As part of the event series 5à7, Massimo Fontana and other project participants will give the SIA regional group Biel-Seeland an in-depth insight into the creation of the island in the course of a guided tour on 24 August.
