Birth Hour of an Island – the Schüssinsel in Biel opens

The new Schüssinsel combines ecological, sociological, hydrographic and town planning aspects in an unusual manner. :mlzd Architekten initiated the process with their explorative design for the Gygax-Areal. Fontana Landschaftsarchitektur brought together the knowledge of the different experts when designing the new island. A quiet park and space for sports and games, a refuge for nature, a spot on the water and an engineering development to provide flood defences: functional requirements became aspects that moulded the design – the park world oscillates between the contrasts.
