Uptown Basel: A green lung for the industrial area

The old Schoren industrial site in Arlesheim is to become “Uptown Basel”, a centre of excellence for digital industry. An open working and living environment with industry, offices, commercial space, cultural and leisure uses is to be created around the protected historic halls. The urban development concept also takes aspects such as the settlement climate and biodiversity into account.

The master plan and the guideline project by Fontana Landschaftsarchitektur and Fankhauser Arealentwicklung convinced not only the client, but also the authorities – and now the population – with a fundamentally new approach to the subject of open spaces. Moving the buildings closer together makes room: for the extended riverbank space of the Birs, for parks, green access axes and green roofs, which will give the industrial site completely new qualities.
