Competition Success Bernstrasse Lucerne

150 affordable flats are to be built on Bernstrasse in Lucerne under the construction oversight of the two cooperatives ABL and Matt, turning the thoroughfare into a living space.

Three types of outside space will provide answers, via their function and design, to three of the location’s challenges: the front gardens tie the new neighbourhood into the streetscape and the surrounding environment – implementing a formal language typical of front gardens as well as an unusual and lavish use of plants. The garden, a grassy slope planted with trees, sheltered by the new buildings, is designed to be an open space of calm away from the traffic with private places of retreat and open spaces of encounter. The public square contrasts an atmosphere of sojourn on the one hand with the through-road meeting-place atmosphere on the other – open to the street, framed by the buildings at the side and shaded by lime trees.
